Annandale and Southern Upland, around Moffat

Updated: Jan 22, 2022

This is a roughly 5-mile flat route which is quite accessible and OK even when wet! Start at the Moffat Ram in the centre of Moffat town, DH10 9HJ. There is plenty of free parking in the town. Walk south-east on the High Street, heading towards Brodies and the Black Bull, then turn onto Holm Street and the A708. You will walk past Moffat Academy and Moffat rugby club on your right. When you get to the crossroads, turn right into Old Carlisle Road.

Follow Old Carlisle Road, past the Dark Sky Spirits distillery (which is still being built). The road narrows here. If you carry on, you can pick up the Southern Upland Way from this road and follow it to where this photo was taken. However, as we had our young Labrador with us, we didn't want to walk along a narrow road with no pavement. Instead we took a lane off to the right, also with no pavement but much quieter. This lane is very pretty with a few paddocks with horses. This photo was taken when we reached the Southern Upland Way, which is well-signposted. Take the Southern Upland Way to the right and follow up until you reach a wooden sign telling you about the services to be found in Moffat. You are now on the Annandale Way.

The Annandale Way takes you across fields of sheep with lovely hill views beyond. When you get to the end of the fields, you will see Moffat Community Nature Reserve to your right. Head out to the main road, the A701, turn right and head back to Moffat. You can either walk back in to the town and the the Moffat Ram where you started or you can turn left opposite Station Park and take the riverside walk.

From the riverside, you can take any of the paths to the right and they will take you back in to the town. Once you reach two bridges (one old, one new), you have gone too far! But you can go up the steps just before the bridge and follow the road back in to the town.
