Shorwell circular walk

Updated: Sep 24, 2019

There is plenty of parking along the side of the road in the village of Shorwell, on the Isle of Wight. Now, some people call it 'Shor - well' and others call it 'Shorull'! Whichever, it is a very pretty village with a couple of nice pubs to visit after your walk.

There are a number of footpaths off the B3399, aptly named Walker's Lane, in Shorwell, either heading east or west. However, on this occasion, I took the footpath heading east (slightly north-east) at grid reference: SZ454828 (closest postcode: PO30 3JZ). Follow this path, taking in the spectacular views as in the photo below until you get to a five-way junction at SZ436835. Then either turn sharp right as if you are turning back on yourself, turn right and head up the hill or keep going straight (depending on how far you wish to walk) following the footpath until you meet the Worsley Trail.

Once on the Worsley Trail, head east. This is a wide path, like a farm track. You may need to negotiate with cows over who has right of way along this stretch. Do take a short detour off the path to go to the viewpoint on Limerstone Down.

At SZ446837, just beyond a fence, take the path to the right back down the hill, across fields, in to Shorwell. You will see the beautiful Wolverton Manor at the bottom of the hill to your left.

All being well, you should finish up at the same point where you first joined the footpath.

Depending on which path you take on the Down, how long you stop at the viewpoint and how well you navigate the descent across the fields back in to the village (!), this walk should last about an hour and a half. If you time it right, just in time for lunch...

Beautiful view of south Wight, across to Brighstone and beyond!
