The Kennet and Avon Canal, Newbury

We stopped off at Newbury, to have lunch, on our way back from the Peak District. We wandered around this Berkshire market town and found this pleasant walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

We walked a stretch of the Speen Moors Walk, which is a 3km accessible walk. This circular walk starts in the centre of Newbury, at the north end of Northcroft Leisure Centre. It describes the area's heritage and natural history displayed on ten colourful display boards.

The Kennet and Avon Canal has an overall length of 87 miles (140 km) made up of two lengths of navigable river linked by a canal. The name is often used to refer to the entire length of the navigation rather than just to the central canal section. From Bristol to Bath the waterway follows the course of the River Avon before the canal links it to the River Kennet at Newbury, and from there to Reading on the River Thames.

We enjoyed watching the narrow boats navigate the canal and we found the operation of the locks very interesting. We walked part of the Speen Moors Walk, reading the information boards along the way, until the path left the side of the canal. Then we returned back to the town and visited the Lock Stock and Barrow for an excellent lunch!
