Yarmouth circular walk

Updated: Aug 14, 2019

This circular walk can be accessed directly from the Wightlink Yarmouth to Lymington ferry for day trippers to the Isle of Wight. I started this walk from the large car park in Yarmouth: postcode: PO41 0NJ; grid ref SZ 353 896. This walk is about 4 miles and will take about 2 hours. It is an easy walk with very few hills but is probably not suitable for prams or wheelchairs on all the footpaths.

After leaving the car park, passing the green buoy and Yarmouth Primary School on your right, turn down Mill Lane. Continue straight down this well-kept path with the River Yar on your right and woodland on your left until you get to the causeway. Turn right and cross the bridge, then walk up the hill looking out for a well-signposted footpath to your right. If you get to the pub on your right, you have gone too far! This footpath is the Freshwater Way, the Yarmouth to Compton footpath, and it is signposted from here at every path junction all the way back to the main road in Yarmouth.

Most of the paths back up to Yarmouth, with the harbour on your right, are through farmland. The views are beautiful the whole way, and even once you get back to the main road, you have views like the one below, taken of the harbour from the bridge. Turn right on the main road and follow the pavement over the bridge in to Yarmouth. You will see Yarmouth Harbour office on your left, before the bus station and ferry terminal. Inside the Harbour office is the Tourist Information point where you will find leaflets and brochures giving you information about the town of Yarmouth and local area.

If you choose not to linger in Yarmouth, take the path on the right, after the bridge, back to the car park.

Yarmouth harbour.
